Ladies Underwear, A Motionless Dog And An Iron Lung

HEART OF THE WOLDS SPORTIVE – 23/04/17

I had resisted entering for a few weeks pleading poverty….

“…. I am a poor pensioner …the cat needs an operation….the boiler has gone kaput…..we are down to our last 25Kg bag of porridge…..what about Brexit ?!!”

But in the end there was no escape. I knew it was April and therefore I had to do The Heart Of The Wolds sportive. It’s the law.

It was The Classic route for Annette and I again this year, 60 miles in the Yorkshire Wolds over a range of terrain…

Flat….. no problem

Downhill……positive pleasure….as long as it’s not too steep as my eyes start to water at 30 mph and I get a bit scared.

Rolling…….yeah OK so long as the uphill bits don’t go on for too long

Challenging ……you mean steep hills don’t you !? Oh come on !

This year we would be doing the event with Rich who luckily turned up in his Cottingham Road Club jersey giving me the wafer thin justification I need to call this a club ride and therefore put this blog on the club website.

Mini Pasties, Telepathy And The Heart Of The Wolds Sportive

HEART OF THE WOLDS SPORTIVE – 24/04/16

The great thing about cycling is the freedom. You can hop on your machine and ride on the public roads and lanes at any time day or night for no cost.

All you need is some get up and go……and a bike of course that can set you back thousands if you are that way inclined.

But we won’t mention that.

Suffice to say the great outdoors is free. There are no gym memberships to pay, no green fees, no booking fees.

When you have experienced cycling on your own, then moved on to cycling with friends or in a club you are then ready to move onto the next stage of your development.

A stage where you willingly pay to ride the same roads and lanes you can ride at any other time for free.

A stage where you willingly pay to ride with the same friends and club mates that you always do.

The time has come for you to enter a sportive.

CTC SPRING STANDARD RIDE 06-03-16

When I arrived at the Methodist Church Hall in Cottingham for the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) Spring Standard Ride I was still unsure which ride I was going to do.

Would it be the 50 or would it be the 70 ?

I had done the 50 miler last year. A  gloriously flat ride but we had taken a beating in some exposed sections from a seriously gusting wind.

The 70 miler, on the other hand, was going to be a hilly challenge.

Unconfined joy, more hills !

CRC RIDE TO WORSENDALE, GIVENDALE & NUNBURNHOLME – 27/02/2016

The CRC ride on Saturday the 27th of February was going to be a hard one.

An expedition deep into the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds to tackle some serious hills.

Are there any other kinds ?

The stars of this hill fest would be Worsendale Road rising up from the village of Bishop Wilton followed by the nearby Givendale Lane and to finish would be the old favourite of Nunburnholme Hill.

A lumpy extravaganza of just under 60 miles for the return journey from Cottingham.

COTTINGHAM ROAD CLUB – RIDE 24/01/16 – SLOW GROUP “A”

My new Cottingham Road Club winter jersey had finally arrived.

The sales pitch had been unequivocal :

” ORDER NOVEMBER TO RECEIVE IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS !! ”

Cott Jersey
COTTINGHAM’S NEXT TOP MODEL

However, it never said which Christmas did it ?

I had finally got my hands on the jersey in January and was now looking for an opportunity to get out there and show it off.

The opportunity would present itself on the club ride scheduled to take place on Sunday the 24th of January. A relatively short ride of approximately 35 miles starting from Cottingham and taking in some local hills.

Donning my new jersey brought back memories of wearing new trainers to school.

Would I be picked on by the cool kids ?

Hey C’mon. These people are not children.
