We’ve all been there – someone driving a car arrives at a junction, makes a quick look round and pulls out, only for them to screech to a halt a few inches from you or more likely you have to stop the bike on a 10p to avoid the collision.

The well known SMIDSY response of “Sorry mate, I didn’t see you”is very effectively explained by the John Sullivan, an ex-RAF fighter pilot and cyclist. ┬áHe provides technical and scientific explanations of how our vision systems work, how most of the time our brain is making up the World around us and finally how, as cyclists, we can counter this effect.

Please either download the article directly or spend a few minutes on the cycling london website who have done a great blog post explaining John’s results.
